Originally released for the arcades in 1987 by SEGA, Super Hang On is one of the definitive all-time arcade racers ever. What started out in an era were arcades were the place to be & were all your money was spent, you can guarantee that this game would have taken up countless hours of your time. The arcade machines for this game even had a motor bike frame for your to sit on to help you steer your bike & you were up against it racing against fellow racers & striving to reach each checkpoint before the time ran out & the difficulty would increase the further you managed to get. It was a very addictive game.
1989 saw a version of the game released on the SEGA Mega Drive without a motorbike frame to help steer sadly, but still managed to capture the same look & feel of the arcade original. The game played well with a very fast sense of speed & not knowing if you were going to make it out of a tight corner in one piece…. Great fun…!
Now the game has recently been re-released on the Playstation network & XBLA as part of the SEGA Vintage Collection with enhanced visuals & colours for running in HD. The main menu screen is a nice touch that shows a live circuit board with lots of small flickering lights & the actual options are displayed as processor chips which is pretty cool. There is also an option for the game to be played on a 3D standard TV. Different modes are available including trials were you must compete for the quickest times & gain the highest scores to place on the online leader-boards, also a replay mode has been added to view your previous game-play.
The game itself loses none of its original quality that made it so popular all those years ago & with the addition of online leaderboards & trophy achievements gives players another excuse to dust off their old arcade hats & take a trip down memory lane to remind yourself of those fun times.
Snap it up now that it is on PSN, XBLA, a classic that shouldn’t be ignored…!
